How do I install Debathena on top of an existing Ubuntu or Debian distribution running Sophos Anti-Virus?
Starting July of 2021, IS&T has migrated to a new version of Sophos called Sophos Central. MIT users have until the summer of 2022 before the old version will stop receiving updates. This page references the legacy version of Sophos. You can see documentation for the new Sophos Central here and download the newest version of Sophos here. |
Context
- You have a Ubuntu or Debian distribution running the Sophos Anti-Virus provided by IS&T.
- You wish to install Debathena on top of your existing Ubuntu or Debian distribution.
Answer
Sophos Anti-Virus prevents access to AFS on Athena, so you have to exclude the AFS cell directories from scanning before installation. You can do so either via the command line or a web browser.
Option 1: using the command line
You must have access to the root account. |
- Open the command prompt and enter
sudo /opt/sophos-av/bin/savconfig add ExcludeFilePaths /var/cache/openafs/ /afs/
- Reboot your computer and proceed with the installation of Debathena.
Option 2: using a web browser
- Direct your web browser to http://localhost:8081.
- Click on the "Exclusions" tab.
- Enter your Sophos account username and password when prompted.
- In the "File Scanning Exclusions" box, add the new entries /var/cache/openafs/ and /afs/ under "Files or directories (with or without wildcards)".
Result: You should see the screen
- Reboot your computer and proceed with the installation of Debathena.
