Windows Virtual Machine for Business Use - Install and First Start

On this page:

Getting Ready

Before you install the Windows 7 or 10 Business Applications Virtual Machine on your workstation, there are a few things you should do:

  1. Have the latest IS&T supported version of VMware installed on your computer.
If you do not already have VMware installed, see Available Software: Virtualization and select the correct version for your host operating system.
  2. Read the [documentation] to decide whether the Virtual Machine for Business Use is suitable for your needs.
  3. Review the [Known Issues] to avoid any known pitfalls.
  4. Back up your system. Before beginning any installation, IS&T recommends you have a current and complete backup of your existing system. While we have tested the install process, there is an infinite number of possible system configurations, and some may cause problems.
  5. Memory: 3 GB RAM minimum (2 GB from standard OS X recommendation + 1 GB for virtual host)
  6. Disk Space: 700 MB free disk space for VMware Fusion and at least 10 GB free disk space for each virtual machine (additional space needed for extraction and usage)
  7. Read about VMware Security Recommendations and Best Practices
  8. Download the Windows 7 Virtual Machine for Business Use.

Installation and First Start on Macintosh

  5. Double-click the zip archive to unzip it.

Result: The Virtual Machine will launch.
    • You may be prompted to update VMware Tools inside the VM. You can do this now or later.
  7. You will be prompted through several screens, to personalize the Virtual Machine for your individual use. Accept the default options, keeping in mind:
    • While you may choose any Windows username you like, using your Kerberos username is recommended in order to simplify the process of getting Kerberos tickets.
    • For security reasons, IS&T recommends that you not use your Kerberos password as the Windows login password. IS&T recommends that you set a good password hint, since this password cannot be retrieved or reset by other means.
    • Click on Use Recommended Settings when prompted to choose Windows automatic updates.
  8. After the setup is complete, you will be prompted on the first launch of internet explorer to update Java SE Runtime from Oracle. Please apply this update.
