Q: How do I find my MAC address?

What is a MAC address? What is it used for?
How do I find my device's MAC address?
Where is the MAC address for my computer or game console?

Context

MAC address stands for Media Access Control address and is a unique identifier for the physical network hardware in your computer or network-enabled device. A MAC address is a 12 digit hexadecimal string (meaning it includes numbers 0-9 and letters a-f) that uniquely identifies your network hardware from any other network hardware of any other kind, be it Ethernet, wireless, bluetooth or mobile broadband (essentially another wireless card). Each network interface in your device has its own MAC address.

MAC addresses are used for the following:

  • The identifier for registering your device on the wired network
  • Troubleshooting problems with the wireless
