Q: What are the major changes between Debathena Jaunty and Debathena Lucid?
Answer
The biggest change is that workstations are now running a 64-bit version of Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx). Lucid brings a lot of new software and functionality. However, it also brings some changes:
Login Screen
As you have probably already noticed, the login screen is substantially different. This is due to the substantial changes in the way the GNOME Display Manager (gdm) works. We realize that the new version has a slightly more cumbersome interface, and we're looking at ways to improve this.
The new login process is:
- Click "Log In" button. (screenshot)
- Enter your username in the box provided, and press the Enter key, or click "Log In". (screenshot)
- If you wish to select an alternative login session (such as "Login without customizations"), you'll need to do that at this time. The "Sessions" menu can be found on the bottom of the screen. It is only visible after you have entered your username.
- Enter your password, and press the Enter key, or click "Log In". (screenshot)
Desktop
The new desktop is also somewhat visually different, though functionality remains the same. The Applictions, Places, and System menus are all in the same location, as is the Firefox icon next to them. The Mail icon has moved to the right-hand side of the top panel, next to the date and time. Alternatively, you can go to the "Applications" menu, select the "Internet" category, and choose "Athena Mail." Your username is now displayed in the top right corner of the screen, instead of your full name. You can still click the power symbol icon to log out.
The titlebars of windows have changed: the "Close", "Minimize", and "Maximize" buttons have moved to the left hand side of the titlebar. The window menu (previously accessible via an icon on the left hand side of the titlebar) is now accessible by right-clicking anywhere on the titlebar.
