On this page:

Overview

The MIT ID is a digital (or physical) credential enabling community members to authenticate themselves to card readers on and off campus. Visit the IS&T website for service details.

Frequently asked questions

What are the device requirements for using a digital MIT ID?

Apple:

  • Recent iPhone (SE, 6s, 6s Plus or later) with the latest version of iOS
  • Apple Watch Series 3 or later, with the latest version of watchOS
  • Apple ID signed into iCloud
  • The latest MIT Atlas mobile app from the Apple app store

Android:

  • NFC-capable Android device running Android 7 or higher
  • Ensure that your device has NFC enabled for use
  • The latest MIT Atlas mobile app from the Google Play store

Do I still need my physical card if I have my MIT ID on my mobile device?

You will need a physical card if you use your MIT ID as T Pass. A physical card may also be used as a backup if your device loses power.

If I lose my physical card does my T-pass automatically transfer to the new card?

T-pass funds on an old /lost ID card do not automatically transfer on to a newly printed ID card.

Users can either retain the old card (if not lost) and use it on the MBTA until the funds are completely depleted or can register a new card with the MBTA and report the old card as lost.

MIT Community members can contact MBTA Customer Support at 617-222-3200.

MIT ID cards are not considered to be student Charlie cards by the MBTA.

When reporting a lost card, students, affiliates, retirees, and other non-MIT staff members should advise the T that it is a regular Charlie card. Once reported as lost, the MBTA will refund you the balance from the old card.

Benefits-eligible Staff members without a subsidized Commuter rail pass can print and use a new card as the MBTA pass is paid for by MIT.

Does it cost anything to have an MIT ID?

There is no cost to use your MIT ID on your device. MIT community members may print a maximum of three physical ID cards from a self-service kiosk in one year, at no cost.

Do I have to have a photo?

Yes, a photo is required. You may change your ID photo by updating your profile in the MIT Atlas app.

Who can use the digital MIT ID?

Faculty, staff, and students are eligible as long as they meet all device and software requirements. Alumni may also activate a digital MIT ID by logging into the Tim Tickets mobile app.

Can I use the digital MIT ID in Apple Wallet or on my Android phone without cellular signal?

Your MIT ID can be used even if the phone or Apple Watch does not have network connectivity, as the MIT ID is stored on your device.

Will it work with off-campus merchants?

Yes, you can use your eligible iPhone, Apple Watch, or Android phone at off-campus merchants where TechCASH is accepted.

Will my plastic card still work if I enable the digital MIT ID?

Yes, your card will continue to function as it always has.

On how many devices can I use my MIT ID?

You cannot use the digital MIT ID on both iOS and Android devices at the same time.

  • Apple iOS and watchOS: You can use your MIT ID on up to two devices that are signed into iCloud with the same Apple ID. This would include an iPhone and Apple Watch.
  • Android: You can use your MIT ID on one Android device. Android wearables are not supported at this time.

How do I verify my Apple Watch device version?

The series number for your Apple Watch can be found on the back of the watch. Note: Series 0 Apple Watch is not eligible for this program; Series 1 and 2 will be supported soon. Instructions to verify and/or update your Apple Watch can be found at https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204641.

Can I use my MIT ID if my iPhone has a dead battery?
