Using ArcGIS software through MIT's site license requires you to be connected to MIT's virtual private network (VPN), which requires an internet connection. However, if you know you will be using ArcGIS without an internet connection (e.g. while doing field research in a remote location), a temporary license can be borrowed for up to 60 days:
- Navigate to Start > All Programs > ArcGIS > ArcGIS Administrator.
- Under the Desktop folder on the left side of the window, point to Borrow/Return.
- Check the licenses you will be using, and click Apply. Make sure to check ArcInfo Desktop.
- When you are ready to return the borrowed licenses, return to this page, uncheck everything, and click Apply.
