Q: How do I use ArcGIS off campus without an internet connection?

Answer

Using ArcGIS software through MIT's site license requires you to be connected to MIT's virtual private network (VPN), which requires an internet connection. However, if you know you will be using ArcGIS without an internet connection (e.g. while doing field research in a remote location), a temporary license can be borrowed for up to 180 days (for ArcGIS 10.2 or higher):

  1. Navigate to Start > All Programs > ArcGIS > ArcGIS Administrator.
  2. Under the Desktop folder on the left side of the window, point to Borrow/Return.
  3. Check Desktop Advanced and any other licenses you will be using, and click Apply.
  4. When you are ready to return the borrowed licenses, return to this page, uncheck everything, and click Apply.
