Q: How do I take a screenshot on Athena?
Answer
To take a screenshot of the screen, you can press the "Print Screen" button on your keyboard. A window named "Save Screenshot" will pop up and give you the option to save the screenshot somewhere in your directory. The screenshot will be saved in PNG format, which is readable on nearly all modern operating systems.
You can press Alt-PrintScreen to take a screenshot of the currently active window instead of the entire screen.
Converting the image
If you cannot view PNG files, you can convert the image using the convert command. For example, if you chose to save the file as "screenshot.png" in your "Desktop" folder and want to convert it to JPEG format:
The convert command figures out the format based on the filename extension.
Advanced features
You can also run the gnome-screenshot command from the Terminal, which gives you the ability to take a screenshot after a specified number of seconds, which can be useful for capturing screenshots of menu items or transient windows.
For example, to take a screenshot after 5 seconds, use the following command:
After 5 seconds, a screenshot will be taken and you will be prompted for a location in which to save it.
For legacy applications, the xwd utility is still available to create a "window dump", which can be viewed with the xwud utility.
