Q: Why can't I use my MIT email address as an alternate email for my personal Google account?

Context

• Users with a personal Google account can add an alternate email addresses to their account and use them to sign in, recover your password, and more. Currently, MIT users may be using their MIT email address as their alternate email address on their personal Google account.

• MIT is enabling Touchstone for the MIT Google Apps Domain (as is the case with Atlas, Stellar, and other MIT services).

• As part of this change, users who associate their MIT email address with a personal Google account will no longer be able to do so. Once this change goes into effect, you will be prompted upon login that the account is managed by MIT and you will need to remove the address from your personal Gmail account.

• You can still use your MIT email as a recovery address for your personal Google account.

Answer

1. Click the gear in the top right corner of your Gmail account window.
2. Select Settings.
3. Click Accounts and Import.
4. Click Change password recovery options in the 'Change account settings' section.
   You may be prompted to re-enter your password to help verify your password and protect your account.
5. From the Alternate email address box select Remove next to your current MIT email address. (You can also add a different alternate address at this time)
   
6. Click Save to make your changes.
7. Close the Google Account window using your browser's Close button if you don't want to sign out of Gmail just yet.
