Setup Contacts and Mail apps to query MIT's LDAP server OS X 10.9 and up

Instructions

Mail.app uses Contacts to store and access contact information.

  1. Navigate to the System Preferences menu.
    Apple > System Preferences screen

  2. From the System Preferences window, select Internet Accounts.

  3. In the following window, select Add Other Account from the left-hand column and choose Other from the right hand column.  (For 10.12 and up, you might have to select "other" on the right.
  4. "Mail

  5. From the slide-down window, select Add an LDAP account and click Create...
    Choose account type screen

  6. At the Add an LDAP account screen, use the following settings:
    • Description: MIT LDAP
    • Search base: dc=mit,dc=edu
    • Scope: Subtree
    • Server Address: ldap.mit.edu
    • Port: 389
    • Use SSL: unchecked
    • Authentication: None

  7. Click Create.

Mac OS X is now configured to search MIT's LDAP directory.
