Set up Request Tracker quick search from Google Chrome omnibox
Context
- Request Tracker (RT) on help.mit.edu
- Users with consultant or staff roles in RT (to work on tickets)
- Google Chrome web browser (not yet fully supported at MIT)
Answer
If you use Google Chrome as your browser, you can set up the Google Chrome Omnibox to allow you to quickly run an RT search from any open browser window. Here's how to do it:
- Click the wrench icon in Google Chrome to open the browser menu and select Preferences...
- On the Bascis tab (open by default) go to the Search section and click Manage Search Engines...
- At the bottom of the list of search engines you'll see empty text boxes with ghosted text in them to add a new search engine; enter the following into the three boxes:
Box label | Text to enter |
---|---|
Add a new search engine | RT |
Keyword | rt |
URL with %s in place of query | {{
https://help.mit.edu/Search/Simple.html?q=%s
}} |
The first two items are up to you. You can choose different ones from those listed above. We use RT as a label to help you find it in the list. The keyword is used to trigger the search engine from the Omnibox. The last item (URL) should be entered exactly as above. It's what Chrome will use to actually retreive search results.
One you're entered the above you can type rt into the Omnibox, hit space and type any search term you would normally type into the RT search box on help.mit.edu. Hit return and Chrome will retrieve the results from help.mit.edu. Note that you may get a Touchstone login screen before you see the results, if you don't already have an open session in Request Tracker.
Search terms
Omnibox search will work just like typing into the little search box in the upper right corner of Request Tracker pages. In particular, here are the common searches you can run:
Search term format | Searches for... |
---|---|
number | Ticket with that ticket number |
username@domain | All tickets by that Requestor, both open and resolved |
username | Tickets owned by that RT user, open only |
Anything else | Subject/ticket summary, searches across all queues |
