Q: How do I group like windows in the Debathena taskbar?

  • How can I group windows for the same application?
  • How can I collapse open windows into the same taskbar item?

Context

If you're using Debathena and have many windows open for a small set of applications, you may want all the windows to appear as one item on the taskbar, as opposed to many tiny items. (This behavior is probably most familiar to users of Windows XP.)

Answer

  1. On the Debathena (GNOME) desktop, examine the bottom taskbar. On the taskbar is a tiny margin fringe with three horizontal stripes.
    Desktop
    Right-click on the fringe.
Result: The fringe context menu appears.

  2. Click the Preferences menu item.
Result: The window list preferences dialog appears.

  3. Select Group windows when space is limited for behavior most similar to Windows XP's; if you'd like windows to be grouped whenever possible, select the Always group windows option.
  4. Click Close.

Your windows will now group by application.
