Q: Am I running a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows?

Answer

Microsoft offers a knowledge base article to help with this. The article page can automatically determine whether your machine is 32-bit or 64-bit. This Microsoft page also includes a video and written instructions for manually determining which type of Windows is installed on Windows 7 and Windows 8 computers.

For Windows 10 follow these steps.

  1. Click the Start button.
  2. Click Settings.
  3. Click System.
  4. Click About on the left panel.
    Result: The type of operating system will be displayed next to System type:.

For Windows 8/8.1 follow these steps.

  1. Right-click the Start button.
  2. Click System.
    Result: The type of operating system will be displayed next to System type:.
