Student MacBook Loaner Enrollment Process

Be sure to save the packing material your equipment arrived in so you can use it to return it at the end of the loaner period.

  1. Power on your laptop.
    Result: The Setup Assistant will appear and prompt you to select your country.

  2. Select your country and click Continue.
    Result: The Accessibility screen will appear.

  3. You may configure Accessibility options here, or click "Not Now" to continue with default settings. You will always be able to customize these settings later in System Preferences.

  4. Select your Wi-Fi network, enter your Wi-Fi password, and click Contunue.
    Result: The Remote Management screen will appear.

  5. Click Continue.
    Result: You will be prompted to authenticate with your MIT Kerberos name and password.

  6. Enter your MIT Kerberos username and password.
    Result: After a moment, you will be prompted to create a local user account.

  7. This will be pre-filled with the same username and password as your kerb, but you can change it to whatever you like. Enter a Full Name, and click Continue when ready.

  8. We recommend enabling Location Services, but you can leave it off if you prefer. Click Continue when ready.
    Result: The macOS desktop will appear with a progress window showing MIT software installation.

  9. Wait for software installation to complete. The time this takes will depend on your internet connection speed. Expect it to take at least 20 minutes.
    Result: A message will appear saying the computer will restart in 5 minutes.

  10. If you have any open documents, be sure to save changes and close them now. Either wait 5 minutes for the computer to restart automatically, or select "Restart" from the Apple menu to restart immediately. After restarting, log in with your local account username and password.
    Result: You will be prompted to enable FileVault.

  11. Click "Enable Now" to enable FileFault. FileVault is a security feature that will encrypt all of your data, so if a device is lost or stolen your data will remain safe. If you ever forget your password, contact the IS&T Service Desk to get the FileVault Recovery Key.
  12. Setup is now complete. Enjoy your loaner Mac!
