Software Licensing FAQ

You need to find if certain software is available through MIT.

On this page:

Basic Info

Where can I find the answers to most of my questions?

The IS&T Software Grid. It may contain the software you are inquiring about.

IS&T aims to make each software page a waystation that will lead you to the answer to all of your questions. Including:

  • Who is licensed to use the software? (studets, faculty/staff, and/or affiliates)
  • What hardware is that software allowed to be installed on? (MIT-owned and/or personal machines)
  • Why is the software is being used? (academic and/or adminsistrative use)
  • How do I get installation/technical assistance with the software?

If you do not see the software you are looking for in the grid, then you may find it through the search box at the top of that page.

What if I cannot find an IS&T page for the software I am looking for?

It is most likely MIT has not purchased a site-license for that software, therefore, IS&T is not able to distribute it.

However, your Department, Lab or Center may distribute licenses that they have purchased.

You may also want to search the MIT main page for the software you are looking for, as this should show where it is being used on campus.

How can I request software that IS&T does not distribute?

Contact software-distribution@mit.edu.

What if I am not covered by MIT's license?

The IS&T Software pages mentioned above list the licensing terms for the use of each individual piece of software.

Any use outside of that is a breach of contract, for which MIT could be liable.

What if I need the software for work I am doing for MIT?

The software must be installed on an MIT-owned and monitored machine.

  • If you meet this condition than you may be eligable to get the software.
  • Have a faculty/staff member email software-distribution@mit.edu on your behalf.
