Q: Using Gmail to send and receive MIT email

  • I'm at MIT, can you help me setup Gmail?
  • I am an MIT faculty/staff/student, and I would like help getting setup to use Gmail as my mail client. Can you help me?

Context

  • Gmail, email forwarding

Answer

  • MIT does not provide support for Gmail. It is not included in MIT's G Suite for Education.
  • Given that IS&T does not support it, we cannot provide hands-on assistance with setting up Gmail.  However, there are clear instructions as well as help documents easily found on the google.com site. You can go to http://www.google.com, and click on the Gmail link at the top. Then there are links in the bottom right of the screen for "Sign up for Gmail" and "About Gmail" that explain a lot.
  • Once you have a Gmail account set up, you will need to forward or split your MIT email in order to start receiving mail at Gmail. The instructions on how to go about this can be found at the KB article "Email Forwarding Instructions"
  • Additionally, information on moving MIT email from MIT to Gmail can be found in our answer titled "[archive:Backup or archive all MIT email to Gmail]"
