Update DNS settings via command line or script

IS&T has updated the IP addresses of the campus DNS servers. Machines using Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) will use the new DNS server addresses automatically. The new DNS settings will propagate automatically to machines joined to the MIT Windows domain (win.mit.edu).

Currently the old DNS servers are still running; however, they will be shut off in the future, so plan to update DNS settings on devices using static IP addresses as soon as possible. Windows machines not joined to the win.mit.edu domain and Macintoshes will need to be updated. You can run the commands via a script (see below) or update the DNS settings manually.

Note: IS&T recommends that you configure machines to use DHCP whenever possible, rather than hardcoding DNS settings.

Please be sure to test these commands in your environment prior to a full rollout.

Windows 8.1/10 and Server 2012 and up:

Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2:

  1. First, confirm the adapter name with the following command:
  2. Use the adaptername to run the below commands:

Macintosh Computers (10.12, 10.13, and 10.14):

Please see the attached updateDNS.bash script.
