Mac OS X - Print Server Information

Open Athena Connection
To find out the printer's server information, you must first use the Mac OS X Terminal Utility to open an Athena connection.
Note: If you have access to an Athena workstation, you may log into it and start at ist:Find Printer Server Information.
- In Mac OS X, open the Terminal application found on your hard drive in Applications > Utilities > Terminal.
- At the prompt, type ssh athena.dialup.mit.edu -l username where username is the same as your Athena username (your MIT email address without the @mit.edu suffix). Press Enter.
- If you are asked if you want to continue connecting, type yes and press Enter.
- When prompted for your password, type in your Athena password and press Enter.
Result: You are now logged into Athena.
Find Print Server Information
- At the athena% prompt, type moira and press Enter.
Result: The Moira Database Manipulation window opens.
- To go to the Printer Menu, at the Command prompt, type 7 and press Enter.
Result: The Printer Menu window opens.
- To look up printer information, at the Command prompt, type 2 and press Enter.
- At the prompt Hostname of Printer, type the name, or hostname, of the printer you want to use. If you don't know the hostname, print a configuration or test page from that printer
Result: Information for that printer is displayed.
- From the printer information, note the following, which will be needed for setting up LPD/LPR printing:
- Spool host: this corresponds to the Printer Address in the LPD/LPR setup; it will be entered as shown in the format spoolhostname.mit.edu.
- Remote Printer Name: this corresponds to the Queue Name in the LPD/LPR setup, and will be entered as shown in the format printername (without the mit.edu).
Note: Be careful not to confuse these settings with Printer hostname or Printer log host, even though the names may be similar.
- To exit the Printer Menu, at the Command prompt type q.
- In the Terminal window type logout at the athena% prompt to end the session.
