Q: MIT Certificate in Linux with Google Chrome
Can I use a MIT personal certificate in Linux with Google Chrome or Chromium?
Answer
Yes. But sometimes there are difficulties trying to create the certificate in Chrome on Linux.
Most people have a better time if they acquire a certificate with a different browser, and then export from that browser, and import to Chrome.
The following steps can also be taken in Chrome.
- First, get a certificate in Firefox (https://ca.mit.edu/ca/)
- Next, export your Firefox certificate to save it in a file (see Export or Back Up Your MIT Personal Certificates)
- You will need to choose a certificate file name and a password to encrypt the certificate file. Keep track of the password for the next step.
- Finally, import the certificate file into Chrome.
- Click on the menu button in the top right of the browser, and go to Settings.
This should open the chrome settings page. - Click in the search box at the top center of the page and type in "certificate"
This should bring up the search results, scroll down to the bottom until you see "Manage certificates". - Click on "Manage certificates"
This should bring up the Certificate manager. - Within Certificate manager, click on the "Import" button
This should show an "Open File" window. - In the Open File window, find the certificate file that was exported from Firefox.
- Open the certificate file.
- Enter the password that was used to encrypt the file.
This should import the certificate and show it in the "Certificate manager" list in Chrome. - Press the "Done" button to close the Certificate manager, and then close the Chrome Settings window.
- Click on the menu button in the top right of the browser, and go to Settings.

If you don’t want to switch to a separate browser, you can use SIPB’s CertAssist service to get your personal certificate directly in Chrome. CertAssist is a web application that doesn’t require any installation; all cryptography is performed in client-side JavaScript. Simple instructions for Windows, Mac, Linux, and Android are given on the page.
