Install SUN Java Runtime Environment for MITSIS Use

Install SUN Java Runtime Environment
- Download the latest version of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) from Sun:
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp - Click on Windows 7/XP/Vista/2000/2003/2008 Online
Result: The File Download dialog box appears prompting you to run or save the download file - To run the installer, click Run.
- To save the file for later installation, click Save.
- Choose the folder location and save the file to your local system.
Tip: Save the file to a known location on your computer, for example, to your desktop. - Double-click on the saved file to start the installation process.
Result: The installer presents an option to view the License Agreement. - Click the Install button to accept the license terms and to continue with the installation.
- Sun Microsystems has partnered with companies that offer various products. The installer may present you with option to install these programs when you install Java. These programs are not needed for MITSIS. Press Next to continue the installation.
- Continue the installation process, and select Close to close the installation.
- Close and re-launch your browser.
- Access MITSIS at http://mitsis.mit.edu/.
Confirm that Java Runtime Environment is installed and determine the Java version:
Execute the following command:
- Open the command prompt. /Start/Run/cmd <Enter> or /Start/Programs/Accessories/Command Prompt
- type: java -version and press <Enter>
Result: If you have a message similar to the following, your computer is ok and ready to use MITSIS via the Java Runtime Environment.-------------------------------------------------------------- Java version "1.4.x_xx" (or a higher version) Java<TM> SE Runtime Environment <build .....> Java hotspot<TM> Client VM <build .....> --------------------------------------------------------------
If you receive a message with a version lower than "1.4", or any type of error message, or a message similar to:
-------------------------------------------------------------- Java command not found --------------------------------------------------------------
