Q: I registered my computer on the MIT network and now I get a self-assigned IP address and can't get online

  • Computer was able to connect to the MIT network so I could register for MIT's DHCP service. I waited 15 minutes after registering and now I can't get online. I get a 169.254 IP address self-assigned.
  • I can only connect to the MIT Guest network. I am unable to connect to the MIT nor MIT SECURE wireless networks.

Why is this happening?

Context

  • IS&T notices this problem with Sony Vaio computers running Windows Live One Care or other Internet Security programs (Norton Internet Security - for example).

Answer

  • If you have Live Onecare please try disabling this service.
