Delete a printer port

Question(s)

I want to delete a printer port from my Windows computer. How do I delete a port?

Context

  • This article is not about deleting a printer.
  • This article is about deleting the ports that windows printers icons use to send data out to the physical printer devices.

Solution

Deleting a port is possible, but takes careful finesse.

  1. Delete any printers that use this port.
  2. Get properties on another printer on your system.
  3. Click to the Ports tab.
  4. Look at what port the printer is currently using. REMEMBER IT!
  5. Click on the port you want to delete. (It will become the "active" port.)
  6. Click the Delete Port button.
  7. Click back to the port that you memorized in step 4.
  8. Click OK to dismiss the properties dialog.
