Many training options are available for those who wish learn BrioQuery. See IS&T Training for a schedule of classes and to register. If you have further questions, contact warehouse-help@mit.edu

Create a Basic Query:

  1. Open the BrioQuery application.
  2. From the Data Model pull-down menu select Table Catalog. Enter your username and password.
  3. Decide what kind of data you would like to report on. The tables are named appropriately: for example, if you would like information about a cost object, (cost center, internal order, or project WBS element) you would select the cost collector table.
  4. Click on the table and drag it to the body of the screen on the query section.
Result: The table and its contents (data items) now exist in the body of the query section.
  5. Select the data items from the table that you would like to retrieve from the Data Warehouse. Drag the items (one at a time) to the REQUEST line.
  6. If you would like to search for a particular set of data, you need to create a limit.
    1. Select the data items from the table that you would like to limit by. Drag the item to the LIMIT line.
    2. You will be prompted to enter a value for your selection. Enter it in the box next to the green check mark.
    3. After you have entered the value, click the green check mark and then the OK button.
Note: Oracle is case sensitive. Make sure you enter the data in the appropriate case. If you are unsure of the case click on the SHOW VALUES button on the Limit box. This will show you all of the possible values. At this point you may select the appropriate value and click on the OK button.
  7. If you would like to sort by a particular data item click on the item in the REQUEST line and drag it to the SORT line. The default is ascending (A-Z).
  8. You have now constructed a simple query. To process it click on the PROCESS button. When the data comes back they will be returned to the Results section.
Result: You can now view your data in the Results section.
  9. Other Options are:
    • Export the results: from the Results section: go to the File pull-down menu and select Export > Section. Choose the folder to which you wish to export the data, and choose the file type (Excel, Lotus, etc.).
    • Create a Pivot, Chart, or Report with your results.
    • Create more advanced queries
