Configuring Mozilla Thunderbird send from a moira list

Office 365 Mail Server.
These instructions are for O365 accounts. To know what type of account you have, you can reach out at servicedesk@mit.edu. Additionally, IS&T does not support Thunderbird in any official capacity.

Configuration within Thunderbird

Thunderbird is one of the few remaining email clients which permits you to spoof the From address is this manner.

To send-as a list, set up a new "account" where the email address is your list address, and the authentication credentials are your MIT user account. The necessary settings are detailed below.

Account Settings

  • Email address: <list name>@mit.edu
    E.g. mylist@mit.edu

Incoming

  • Server/Hostname: outlook.office365.com
  • Port: 993
  • SSL: SSL/TLS
  • Authentication: OAuth2
  • Username: <kerberos>@mit.edu
    E.g. jsmith@mit.edu

Outgoing

  • Server/Hostname: outgoing.mit.edu
  • Port: 465
  • Connection security: SSL/TLS
  • Authentication method: Normal password
  • Username: <kerberos username>
    E.g. jsmith
