Q: How do I properly configure an LG070 phone to work on the MIT network?
On this page:
Context
- The LG070 is a Korean IP phone that comes with a wireless base station. Many residents connect the wireless base stations, which by default create an insecure (WEP encryption is trivially hacked) network with the SSID "MyLGNet" which interferes with normal residential wireless.
- The wireless base station can cause the MIT wireless connection other residents use to be slow or inaccessible.
- The wireless base station is seperate from the handset's charger.
Answer
The proper way to use the LG070 phone on the MIT network is to disregard (turn off and unplug) the wireless base station it came with and to configure it to use the normal MIT network. Doing so has two important advantages:
- You will be able to use your LG070 anywhere covered by the MIT network, not just near your base station.
- Your router will no longer interfere with the MIT residential network, improving everybody's connectivity.
The routers by default claim to be secured, but the WEP encryption they employ is very easy for a knowledgeable user to break. If someone were to break into your router and do something illegal, it would look as if you were the culprit. |
Connecting to the MIT network.
- Press the hang up/ power button until you are at the home screen
- Press 6, then 4.
- Use the arrows to select "MIT GUEST", then press the top-right button.
- Press the select button (the one between the arrows) twice.
Connect anywhere
You should now be able to use your phone anywhere on the MIT network.
What to do with the base station
Unplug your base station and keep it stored until you move off-campus. This will ensure that it cannot interfere with the wireless connection available to other dorm residents.
