Q: Why does all of someone's unscheduled time look busy when I use iCal?

  • All of the user's unscheduled time displays with diagonal lines; as if it is all considered non-working hours
  • When I invite another MIT exchange user the "no" sign shows next to their name indicating not available. Even when I select a time slot that does not have a meeting scheduled.

Context

  • iCal 4.0
  • Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard)
  • MIT Exchange calendar service

Answer

Using OWA , ask the user to check:

  • Time zone (Options > Regional Settings)
  • Work hours (Options > Calendar > Calendar Work Week)

Notes

  • In the situation, which prompted me to create this article, the user's time zone was set to Bogota, Columbia. As a result, the normal work hours showed as unavailable due to the time difference.
  • Settings set with OWA can differ from settings in iCal.
  • iCal looks at work hours when checking availability. Other calendar clients I tried do not, i.e. Entourage, OWA and OWA Premium.
