Q: Where did the Athena prompt (athena%) go?

  • Why did my prompt change on Debathena workstations?

Context

  • Debathena

Answer

Debathena is focused on maintaining upstream compatibility. For that reason, we have revert to the upstream default shell prompts. The prompt you will see varies slightly depending on your shell. The shell behavior itself has not substantially changed.

Note that documentation may still refer to "the athena% prompt". We are in the process of updating all our documentation.

tcsh users

Users of the tcsh shell (the default shell prior to April 2009) will see a prompt that includes their hostname and working directory.

Old prompt athena%
New prompt w20-575-1:~>

bash users

Users of the bash shell (the default shell for accounts created in April 2009 or later) will see a prompt that includes their username, hostname and working directory.

Old prompt athena$
New prompt joeuser@w20-575-1:~$
