Answer
Note: You must have changed your password since March 2010 or this will not work. If you have not changed your password since March 2010, you will need to change it to access your WIN.MIT.EDU home directory. |
You can do this through the desktop interface or the command line.
Desktop
- From the File menu, choose Connect to server...
- If you don't see the File menu, or it does not contain the "Connect to server" option, click anywhere on the Desktop background, then go back to the menu bar.
- In the dropdown menu for Type:, select Windows share.
- For Server:, enter win.mit.edu.
- For Share:, enter dfs
- For Folder:, enter profiles/, followed by the first letter of your username, then /, then your username. For example, if your username is "joeuser", you would enter "profiles/j/joeuser".
- For Domain Name:, enter WIN.MIT.EDU (capitalization is important).
- For User name:, enter your Kerberos username (do not add @mit.edu). For example, if your e-mail address is joeuser@mit.edu, just type joeuser. You will also need to enter your Kerberos password, but we do not recommend checking the "Remember this password" box. Your window should look similar to this one:
- Click Connect.
A window should now open displaying the contents of your WIN.MIT.EDU home directory.
Unmount before logging out We encourage you to unmount your windows directory (by clicking the eject icon in the left panel of the window) prior to logging out of Athena. |
Command Line
The command line smbclient utility provides an FTP-like interface to your Windows home directory.
To run it:
joeuser@athena:~$ smbclient '//win.mit.edu/dfs' -W win.mit.edu -D /profiles/j/joeuser
Enter joeuser's password: Domain=[WIN] OS=[Windows Server 2003 3790 Service Pack 2] Server=[Windows Server 2003 5.2] smb: \profiles\j\joeuser\>
At the "smb: \profiles\j\joeuser\>" prompt, you can type "?" to see the list of valid commands.
