Q: How do I set a master password in Firefox?

Answer

Firefox on Linux and Athena

  1. Go to the Edit menu and select Preferences.
  2. Click the Security icon in the Preferences window.
  3. Check the box, "Use a master password".
    Result: The Change Master Password window appears.
  4. Enter and re-enter your password.
    Warning: Do not use your Kerberos password!
  5. Click OK.
  6. In the Preferences window, if you do not want Firefox to save your passwords to web sites, uncheck "Remember passwords for sites".
  7. Close the Preferences window.

Firefox on Macintosh OS X

  1. Go to the Firefox menu and select Preferences.
  2. Click the Security icon in the Preferences window.
  3. Check the box, "Use a master password."
    Result: The Change Master Password window appears.
  4. Enter and re-enter your password.
    Warning: Do not use your Kerberos password!
  5. Click OK.
  6. In the Preferences window, if you do not want Firefox to save your passwords to web sites, uncheck "Remember passwords for sites".
  7. Close the Preferences window.
