Using IS&T's volume-licensed Microsoft Office installer
Overview
For self-service installation of Office 365 desktop applications on a machine for your own use, IS&T recommends using Microsoft’s installer, available to students, faculty, and staff by logging into office.com with your MIT email address, and authenticating through Touchstone.
For those MIT staff, faculty, or students who need to install Office on an MIT-owned macOS or Windows computer for use by an authorized MIT user other than themselves, such as in the cases of a shared laboratory computer or for an authorized MIT contractor, IS&T provides the packaged installers below, which are volume-licensed separately for this purpose.
Licensing
Microsoft Office is available to authorized members of the MIT community through MIT's Microsoft Campus Agreement (MSCA).
How to Obtain
To avoid activation problems, uninstall any OEM version that may be on your computer prior to installing IS&T's Enterprise version of the software. See Microsoft’s documentation for uninstall instructions for PCs and Macs.
Download
Obtain volume-licensed installers from IS&T’s Microsoft Campus Agreement site (MIT certificate required).
Install and activate
Applications installed via these packages require an MIT network connection for activation.
Connect to the MIT SECURE wireless network, to a wired MITnet connection, or to MIT's VPN (if off campus) before running the installer.
For MacOS installations, be sure to run both the installer and serializer packages included in the folder.
Important: The computer must be connected to MITnet, either directly or via MIT's Virtual Private Network (VPN), at least once every 180 days for the Office software to remain operational.

It appears that, if one has installed Office on one's off-campus MIT machine some months ago and are now getting a notice that Office needs to be activated, the solution is:
1) Connect to the MITnet via Global Protect
2) Open an MS Office app while connected.
If I'm reading the KB tealeaves correctly this is required every 180 Days. Or, maybe not. IS&T could give us, their colleagues, clear and direct instructions, should it choose to do so.
