Q: How can I connect Tableau to a FileMaker database?

Answer

Connecting Tableau to FileMaker databases is tricky. We've had little success so far, but Tableau claims it can work on Windows. Tableau on a Mac cannot connect to a FileMaker datasource.

  1. Set up the FileMaker database as an ODBC datasource.
  2. On the Tableau start page, under Connect, click Other Databases (ODBC).
  3. In the Server Connection dialog, enter the information from the ODBC connector and click OK.
  4. Click the Search button to see all the tables in your FileMaker database, and choose the tables and joins as you would with any other database source connection in Tableau.

If you're having trouble setting up a connection with your FileMaker database, contact the IS&T Help Desk.

For more information, see the Tableau and ODBC article on the Tableau Knowledge Base.
