Q: How do I join a table to a layer in ArcGIS?

Answer

Joining a table to a shapefile allows a user to add additional attributes to a layer based on an ID field that is common to both the table and the layer's attribute table.

  1. Right click on the layer to which you want to join the table, and click on Joins and Relates > Join.
    1. Box 1 should contain the ID field from the layer.
    2. Box 2 should contain the table you want to join.
    3. Box 3 should contain the corresponding ID field in the table.
  2. If you want to keep features in the layer even if there is no corresponding record in the table, choose to keep all records. If you only want to keep records that are common to both the layer and the table, choose to keep only matching records. Click OK.
