Q: How can I edit a Microsoft Word document on Athena?

LibreOffice

The primary program for editing Microsoft Word (and other Microsoft Office) documents is LibreOffice. LibreOffice is a large office suite, similar to Microsoft Office both in functionality and design.

To run:

  • Click on LibreOffice Writer icon on Gnome applet bar.

Or from the command line:

  1. athena% libreoffice &
  2. Select File > New > Text Document

Abiword

Another alternative is Abiword. As Abiword is just a word processor as opposed to a full office suite, it opens much faster than OpenOffice.org. Abiword can also read and write Microsoft Office formats, as well as many others. Abiword is available in the Ubuntu repository as the abiword package.
