How can a computer be recycled at MIT?

Answer

MIT Community members can recycle computers, monitors, printers, keyboards, and other electronic equipment through the MIT Department of Facilities. Facilities’ recycling crew will pick up your computer CPUs, monitors, printers, fax machines, and other electronics that weigh less than 50 lbs. for recycling.

Smaller electronics like laptops, keyboards, cords and mice can be brought to one of the Specialty Stream Recycling bins in a Distributed Mail Center (DMC).

To request a pick-up go to Atlas Portal : go to General Options > Service Requests > Create a Request > Recycle

Facilities hires an outside contractor to recycle unwanted IT equipment. This includes cathode ray tubes (CRTs), such as those in older computer monitors and TV sets. By Massachusetts law, CRTs must be reused or recycled rather than sent to landfills or incinerators. The contractor adheres to a strict "no landfill" policy.

Any questions about this process may be directed to Jarrod Jones, Supervisor, Recycling/Solid Waste Management, at 253-4111 or recycling@mit.edu. For more complete information please refer to:
