Manually Configure Outlook 2007 or 2010 for MIT Exchange Service


To use Outlook 2007 or 2010 with the MIT Exchange service, you can either use the auto-configure option or manually configure your settings to receive email. Before manually configuring it, you should follow these instructions to try configure Outlook automatically.

If you have not changed your Kerberos password within the last six months, change it here before you proceed with the steps below.
Manual configuration is not a feature in Outlook 2016. See [istcontrib:Configure Outlook for Mac 2016 for MIT Exchange Service]

Setting Up a New Exchange Mail Profile

  1. Go to Control Panel > Mail.
    Result: The Mail Setup - exchange window displays.

  2. Click on Show Profiles... If you are creating a profile for the first time (a new Outlook user), the New Profile window displays:

  3. Enter your new profile name (for example: Exchange) and click OK.
    If you already have a profile, create a new one for Exchange. On the Mail window:
    • Select the button for "Prompt for a profile to be used".
    • Click on the Add... tab.

  4. Check the box for "Manually configure server settings or additional server types" and click Next.

  5. Select Microsoft Exchange Server button and click Next.

  6. The Exchange Server Settings window displays.
    In the Exchange Server Settings window: Enter in the Microsoft Exchange Server name field.
    • Enter the username using the format below.
    • Select the More Settings... button. This may take a while.

  7. You will get a message saying that the action cannot be completed. Click OK.
    Result: The following window displays.

  8. Click OK.

    • Change the detection state to "Automatically detect connection state".
    • Select the Security tab.
      Result: The following window displays.

    • Check the Encrypt data box.
    • Change the logon network security to "Negotiate Authentication" and click Apply.

  9. Click on the Connection tab.
    Result: The following window displays.

    • Check the Connect to my Exchange mailbox using HTTP box, then click on the Exchange Proxy Settings... button.

      Configure the proxy settings exactly as shown below:
      i.e All checkboxes checked, https: //, 'Only connect...'

    • You will go through a series of screens. Click OK twice, then Next, and then Finish to save the proxy settings.
    • Close the Mail Control Panel.

Launching Outlook

Now that you have configured your new profile, you can go into Outlook, select your new profile, and log on.

  1. Launch Outlook and select the newly created profile.

  2. When prompted, log on as exchange\username (for example: exchange\ and click OK.

    Result: Outlook begins setting up your mailbox. Do not close Outlook until all your folders have completed synchronizing.
