How to migrate from Eudora to Apple Mail

NOTE: IS&T does not support Eudora Mailbox Cleaner or Eudora as a mail application.
Make sure you back up your data before proceeding!

Context

  • Mac OS
  • Eudora

Answer

You can set up Apple Mail, and you can use a tool named Eudora Mailbox Cleaner to import Eudora messages into local folders in Apple Mail.

  1. First, set up Apple Mail using the standard IS&T instructions. Make sure to set up an IMAP account, not a POP account.
    1. Confirm that Apple Mail can send and receive mail.
  2. Second, use Eudora Mailbox Cleaner:
    1. Get it from the web: http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/7050/eudora-mailbox-cleaner
The "download" section is about 1/4 of the way down the page.
    2. After downloading, open the disk image and drag the app to the Applications folder.
    3. Locate your Eudora data folder - it normally is located at "~/Documents/Eudora Folder" on MacOS X
    4. Drag the Eudora data folder and drop it onto the Eudora Mailbox Cleaner app.
    5. Choose what to import - Mailboxes, Nicknames, Filters.

After importing Mailboxes, you will see new folders in Mail called "imported / inbox".

You may need to "Repair" the imported folders from within Mail to make the imported messages show up.
