Web Publishing - Domain Names

For a comprehensive look at web hosting options, please see What are my options for making a website at MIT?

Policy around which projects are eligible for a top level hostname is here:
https://sites.mit.edu/custom-domain-names/
Note that this policy (essentially that top level hostnames need to serve an MIT official purpose) applies to all services that host web content.

It's usually recommended that you have content ready before making a name request. Quick links:

Reserving a name without content isn't normally allowed within the MIT namespace; if a name is sufficiently generic that it might be in demand by many groups, using it is going to be at the discretion of the Communications Team, reachable at ci@mit.edu not IS&T.

For most top level name requests, please contact the Service Desk servicedesk@mit.edu, and provide detailed information - the intended name, who the staff/faculty sponsor will be, and the specifics of the destination.

It's additionally possible for IS&T to host redirects, and to attach names to several other services (including web.mit.edu) - these are all special requests that you should specify in your Service Desk ticket in as much detail as possible.

If you have physical hardware that needs an IP address and hostname allocated on campus, see https://ist.mit.edu/network/ip-request (This is not a web hosting request, but please distinguish this from web hosting requests).
