TSM FAQ

On this page:

How can I reinstall TSM on Windows?

  1. From the Start menu, go to Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.
  2. Select TSM, then Add/Remove.
Result: The Wizard appears and offers these choices: Modify, Repair, Remove.
  3. Select Repair and follow the Wizard prompts.

How long does TSM keep copies of previous versions of my files?

When a modified file is backed up, TSM keeps the previous version of the file for an additional 30 days. TSM keeps a copy of the current ("active") version of each file as long as the partition on which it resides has been backed up in the last 180 days.

How long does TSM keep copies of files deleted from my computer?

On each incremental backup, TSM marks files that have been deleted since the last backup. These file copies are deleted from TSM 30 days after the file was marked as "deleted".

How can I archive some of my files?

Consider selecting older but critical files for archiving if you want to remove them from your computer. Contact the IS&T Help Desk for more information and see: IBM documentation on Spectrum Protect 'Archive' command

What is the TSM error log?

TSM creates an error log that shows problems due to password expiration, disk-reading errors, directory problems, access problems, or transmission failure. Contact the IS&T Help Desk for help with its contents.

  • On Linux/UNIX, log files are usually in /opt/tivoli/tsm/client/ba/bin
  • On Windows, files are usually in C:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\baclient
  • On a Mac, files are usually in ~/Library/Logs/tivoli/tsm, /Library/Logs/tivoli/tsm, or /opt/tivoli/tsm/client/ba/bin

What if I'm leaving MIT or transferring to another office?

Take these steps to protect your personal files on the TSM server:

  • If you are leaving MIT, Cancel Your TSM Account, or if you want to turn the machine over to a lab-mate, use the TSM web page, Update info/request services, select "Change owner or machine name" and enter the information, and click submit.
  • Delete all personal files from your computer(s) and run a backup.
  • If you are transferring to another MIT office, consult your current supervisor or network administrator about transferring your TSM subscription to your new department.
