Static IP and hostname basics

On this page:

You can only use static IPs over a wired Ethernet connection. Static IPs are not supported by the MIT wireless network.

A hostname is is the unique name by which a network-attached device (which could consist of a computer, file server, network storage device, fax machine, copier, cable modem, etc.) is known on a network. In our case, a hostname comes with its own static ip address; this is not always the case outside of MIT. A Ethernet printer can be addressed to either a hostname or a static IP address.

To provide someone with a hostname, a static IP address needs to be provided for them. When using a utility like Moira to create a hostname for someone, an IP address is automatically generated. Along with that IP address, the following information is essential to allowing the client to make use of their new hostname (Note the gateway field, which changes depending on which building the hostname was assigned to).

Subnet Mask
Default Gateway/Router 18.x.0.1 (x = subnet)
