How to switch your standalone Drupal site from the GSA module to the CSE module for MIT custom search
Google Search Appliance discontinued Google has discontinued their enterprise Google Search Appliance (GSA) product and will not be renewing MIT’s license for our on-campus appliance. As of the end of June 2018, the Google Search Appliance will no longer be available to MIT web site owners for custom search. In its place, we recommend web site owners use a Google Custom Search Engine (CSE). Please see Adding a Search Box to your MIT website for more information on the options available to MIT web site owners. |

Answer
On June 22nd, 2018, MIT's license for our Google Search Appliance (GSA) will expire. As mentioned above, Google is not renewing licenses for this product. In the past MIT has made a Drupal module available that enables search through the GSA. This module will stop working after June 22nd, 2018. If your Drupal site is still using the legacy MIT GSA Drupal module, you have two easy options for transitioning off of it.
Disable the MIT GSA module and revert to built-in Drupal search
- Make sure you are logged into your Drupal site as an administrator.
- Under Home >> Administration >> Modules, select Modules and scroll down to the Google Appliance module, then un-check the Enabled checkbox to disable Google Appliance Search.
- Under Configuration >> Search and metadata >> Search settings, scroll to Active Search Modules and make sure the box next to Node is checked.
- Under Home >> Administration >> Structure >> Blocks, scroll down to the Search form block and set its Region via the pulldown menu to the desired page region.
Disable the MIT GSA module and enable the CSE module
- Make sure you are logged into your Drupal site as an administrator.
- Install the CSE Drupal module from Google Custom Search Engine Drupal Module
- Under Home >> Administration >> Modules, select Modules and scroll down to the Google Appliance module, then un-check the Enabled checkbox to disable Google Appliance Search.
- Under Home >> Administration >> Modules, select Modules and scroll down to the Google Custom Search Engine module, and check Enable.
- Under Configuration >> Search and metadata >> Search settings, scroll to Active Search Modules and make sure the box next to Google CSE is checked.
- Under Home >> Administration >> Structure >> Blocks, scroll down to the Google CSE block and set its Region via the pulldown menu to the desired page region.
If you are using your own Google CSE, you will need your CSE ID to configure the Google CSE module for your site. If you would like to use the MIT CSE, use the MIT CSE ID is:
