EPM Lite Touch Windows Imaging

On this page:

Before imaging a computer, please make sure that any needed files have been copied to another device. Imaging will format the drive and all data will be lost.

Requirements

  • PC needs to be plugged in to a wired network.
  • Your computer will need to have the wired NIC registered for DHCP before being able to PXE boot. You can register the MAC address here: https://nic.mit.edu/cgi-bin/hlreg.
  • Onboard NIC is in the boot sequence (F12) and that it's enabled with PXE in the BIOS.

Boot Mode

Should I boot my computer in BIOS (Legacy) mode or UEFI mode?

Supported Models

Currently, the drivers for the following models are configured for injection during imaging. Driver pack version is listed in parentheses when available.

Dell provides driver files in a CAB file for each model. Lenovo also provides driver packs. If the model of computer you would like to image is not listed here, please send a request to endpointmanagement@mit.edu and we will load the driver pack for you if it's available. We will need to know if you need drivers for Windows 7 or Windows 10 as well as the exact model number. You will need to run the following command to identity the exact model.

  • Dell, HP, Microsoft - run command in quotes, "wmic csproduct get name"
  • Lenovo - run command in quotes, "wmic csproduct get version" and "wmic csproduct get name"

Send the output of the commands to endpoint management. If there is not already an operating system on the computer, boot to EPM Lite Touch and press F8. This will open up a command prompt where you can run these commands.

Procedure

Please be aware that this imaging process will wipe out any existing data on the first physical drive that is available on the computer. So, if the computer has a two partitions on one physical drive, i.e. C: Drive and D: drive, then both partitions will be wiped out and the disk will be formatted as one single C: drive partition.
  1. Select Onboard NIC.
  2. Select Boot WIN.MIT.EDU WDS from the iPXE boot menu
  3. When it gets to the Windows Boot Manager, choose EPM Lite Touch.
  4. You may be prompted to register your computer's NIC for DHCP. Please complete the DHCP registration.
  5. Type in your MIT Kerberos account ID and Password.
Log into server with MIT credentials
  6. You'll need to select a task sequence and then click Next. The recommended version of Windows 10 Enterprise (x64) is the default selection.
  7. You can choose to join a computer to the domain at this step. If you've already pre-created your computer object in AD using ADUC, then simply type your target computer name. Or if you're joining the computer to the domain under an Endpoints OU, then select your OU from the drop-down menu (computer is automatically placed in the target OU). Or you can choose to leave the computer as a standalone machine.
  8. Choose the applications that you would like to install from the list and then click Next. The imaging process will start.
  9. The computer will go through several reboot cycles as the software is installed. Microsoft updates for both OS and Microsoft applications will be downloaded and applied during the installation process. This will result in a fully patched and update-to-date system.
