Q: Are Athena workstations 32-bit or 64-bit?

Answer

As of September 2010, the public IS&T-maintained Athena workstations and quickstations run a 64-bit operating system.

Maintainers of private Athena workstations may choose whether to install a 32-bit or 64-bit version of the operating system when they install the Ubuntu software prior to running the Debathena installer. Debathena plans to support both 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems for the short term, but this decision may be revisited in the future.

32-bit Workstations in W20-575

There are a few legacy applications (e.g. Pro/Engineer) that do not run on the 64-bit version of Debathena. For this reason, we have designated a few workstations in the W20-575 cluster as 32-bit workstations. These are clearly marked with large signs. Whenever possible, users should use regular workstations, and reserve these 32-bit workstations for users needing access to legacy applications.
