|As of July 1, 2013, McAfee Security for Mac and McAfee VirusScan for Windows and Linux are no longer distributed by IS&T. Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows, Mac or Linux are now being provided and are available from the Software Grid.|
- I am running Windows and been running McAfee security software. Suddenly McAfee Security Scan Plus shows up on my system. I don't remember downloading it myself.
- I was prompted to update an application. When I did, the download told me it is installing McAfee Security Scan Plus as well as the update. Is this software legitimate or one of those fake antivirus malware programs?
You will likely come across a message, like in the image below, to install McAfee Security Scan Plus when you are prompted to update Adobe Reader, Adobe Flash or other web browser plug ins.
The software is legitimate. See these FAQs of the product provided by McAfee. According to this document:
This is a free diagnostic tool that detects the security status of a user's computer for Antivirus software, Firewall protection and Web security.
In other words, it will check to see if your AV software, firewall and web security settings are secure enough (according to the diagnostics they determine). The product will advise you on what steps to take to solve any security issue (often involving purchasing a product by McAfee).
It is not an IS&T recommended product. However, since it is not a harmful product per se, we don't think using it will do any harm to your system.
There is very little information or any reviews about the product but here is one posting found online that discourages using it.
Beware of fake antivirus software offerings that pretend to be legitimate! They are also known as scareware (as explained in this article).
