Q: How do I configure Thunderbird to read newsgroups?

Answer

  1. From the Edit menu, choose Account Settings, and then click the Add Account... button. This will start the Account Wizard.

  1. Select Newsgroup account from the list of account types, and click Next.

  2. Enter your name and email address (these will be used when posting to newsgroups)

  3. Enter usenet.mit.edu as the newsgroup server

  4. Enter a name for the account to uniquely identify it. If you can't think of one, "MIT Newsgroups" is a good choice.

  5. Verify that the settings are correct, and click Finish. You will then see the new account listed in the left column of Thunderbird.

  6. Click on Manage newsgroup subscriptions to subscribe to various newsgroups.

  7. Thunderbird will download the list of groups from the server. You can browse through the list, or begin typing a newsgroup name in the box provided.

  8. You can then place a checkmark next to the groups you wish to subscribe to, and click OK. The newsgroups you subscribe to will appear in the left column if you expand the MIT Newsgroups listing.
