Q: How do I tell if my email is on the Exchange email server or the IMAP email server?

To check which server your email is on, login to Athena and issue the following command at your prompt:

chpobox your-username

Be sure to replace your-username with your MIT/Kerberos username. The result will list a "Type". IMAP means your mail is going to IMAP email server. EXCHANGE means your mail is going to the new Exchange email and calendaring server.

The following example shows the results for the user "oddball" who is on the IMAP email server.

athena% chpobox oddball
User oddball, Type IMAP, Box: oddball.po (oddball@PO12.MIT.EDU)

If the type is "SPLIT" then your email is forwarded, but your home mail server will still be listed, like so:

athena% chpobox oddball
User odball, Type SPLIT, Box: (oddball@EXCHANGE.MIT.EDU,

If the type is "SMTP" then your mail is being forwarded to another server, and your home mail server will not be listed. In this case, one quick way to see what your home mail server is, is to very quickly turn your mail forwarding on and off. You can do this like so:

chpobox -p; chpobox -s

This will turn your forwarding off (and tell you which type you have), and then immediately turn it back on again.

Otherwise, if you need assistance determining which system you use, contact the Help Desk.
