How do I connect to eduroam on Windows 7?

Many people will be able to connect by using the Windows built-in menus:

  1. Select "eduroam" from the list of wifi networks, and press "Connect".
  2. You will be prompted for a username and password. Enter the full email address of your school. MIT users should enter your Kerberos username with "" on the end:
  3. (Sometimes) If your computer has not yet encountered the certificate that encrypts the connection, it may show a Windows Security Alert warning that "The connection attempt could not be completed."
    • You can press a button to view Details.
    • You can verify the details against the information listed at Eduroam Certificate Fingerprints
    • Press "Connect" to go on.
  4. Your school username and school password will be sent to your school for verification. If they work, your wifi will connect.

Manual Configuration

Some people may need to set up the connection manually:

  1. Go to the Windows Control Panel

  2. Type Network and Sharing in the upper right hand corner. Click Network and Sharing Center

  3. Click Manage Wireless Networks

  4. Remove any instances of eduroam

  5. Click Add to add a new network

  6. Click Manually Create a network profile

  7. Fill in the following information for the new network:
    • Network Name: eduroam
    • Security Type: WPA2-Enterprise
    • Encryption Type: AES

      Click Next

  8. On the following page, choose to Change connection settings

  9. Click the Security tab. Network authentication method should be
    Microsoft: Protected EAP (PEAP)
    Click Settings

  10. Under Trusted Root Certification Authorities, check the box for
    AddTrust External CA Root
    Select Authentication Method should be:
    Secure Password (EAP-MSCHAP v2)
    Click Configure

  11. Uncheck the box labeled "Automatically use my Windows logon..."
    Click OK on all boxes to close out and save the wireless settings

  12. You should receive a notification asking for additional information. Click this notification anywhere to open the password dialog box

  13. Enter your full school email address and password, and press OK

Note: If this process fails, please try to follow it one more time. Occasionally, IS&T has noticed the Windows wireless configuration utility lose the settings after the first setup.
