How do I configure Messages, iMessage or iChat to connect to MIT's Cisco Jabber server?

Messages replaced iChat in February 2012 in OS X 10.8, Mountain Lion and brings support for iMessage, is the instant messaging app. developed for OS X, IOS, and WatchOS operating systems.


  1. Navigate to the Apple Menu in the upper left of the screen and select System Preferences.

  2. Under the heading Internet & Wireless select Internet Accounts on OS X.10, Yosemite, or Mail, Contacts & Calendars in OS X.9 versions and earlier.

  3. In the right-hand column, scroll down and select Add Other Account.

  4. Select Add a Messages Account from the subsequent list and click Create.

  5. On the "Add a Messages Account" screen, use the following values:
    • Account Type: Jabber
    • Account Name:
    • Password: Your Password
    • Server:
    • Select the check-box labeled: Use SSL
  6. Click Create.

  7. Open Messages and set your status to Available.

  8. When prompted with a Verify Certificate screen, select Show Certificate.

  9. Select the checkbox next to Always trust "" when connecting to "" and then select Continue.

  10. When prompted, enter your Mac username and password and select Update Settings.

  11. Messages is now configured to use MIT's Jabber service.
