Who should hold the copyright on my thesis?

There is no general answer to who should hold the copyright to your thesis. According to the "Specifications for Thesis Preparation" (in part):

    The Institute's policy concerning ownership of copyrights to theses is
    covered in Faculty Regulation 2.71. The following are the relevant
    provisions: the Institute will retain ownership of the copyrights to
    theses only

	    (1) if the thesis research is performed in whole or in part by
	    the student with financial support in the form of wages, salary,
	    stipend, or grant from funds administered by the Institute

	    (2) if the thesis research is performed in whole or in part
	    utilizing equipment or facilities provided to the Institute under
	    conditions that impose copyright restrictions.

    In all other cases, ownership of copyright shall reside with the student.

For information about who should hold the copyright on your thesis, please consult your department headquarters or thesis advisor. Please verify your copyright information BEFORE your thesis is due!

Giving distribution permission to the Institute

If the thesis is copyrighted to you, you must give the Institute permission to distribute it, and should use the "vi" documentstyle in your main thesis file. Specifically, in the first line that says something like this:

\documentstyle[11pt]{thesis}

add the vi option like so:

\documentstyle[vi,11pt]{thesis}

Again, check with your department or thesis advisor as early as possible to avoid major problems!
