How can I access my Windows (SMB) file server from Athena?

The smbclient program can be used to access Windows file shares from Athena. This program provides an ftp-like interface to access Windows servers.

To list the shares on a host, use the "-L" option to smbclient:

joeuser@athena:~$ smbclient -L hostname

Note: Be sure to fill in the correct information for hostname.

To connect, specify a hostname and a share name:

joeuser@athena:~$ smbclient //hostname/share

Note: Be sure to fill in the correct information for hostname and share.

Note: You cannot easily use the smbclient program to connect to your WIN.MIT.EDU DFS home directory (your "H:" drive on WinAthena machines). To do that, please see How can I access my WIN.MIT.EDU (WinAthena) home directory from Linux?.
