Q: How can I print from Debathena to a printer that isn't in the printer list?

Answer

On Debathena, most public printers should appear in the list of printers in every application's print dialog. However, some printers are not listed because: a) they're in a department or lab; or b) they require Kerberos authentication.

There are two ways to print to a printer not listed in the print dialog:

Print to LPR

  1. Access your application's print dialog as you normally would. In most applications, you should see an option at the top of the printer list called "Print to LPR".
  2. When you select this option, a text box will appear below the printer list window. In that text box, you can type the lpr command you would normally use to print to that printer.
For example, to print to the printer "printername", you would type lpr -Pprintername as in the example below. Once you click the "Print" button, your document will be forwarded to the printer you selected.

Print to file

If the "Print to LPR" option is not available, as is the case in some applications (e.g. MATLAB), you will need to create a PostScript file. Consult the documentation for your application to determine how to generate PostScript output. Once you have done that, you can print it from the Terminal window using the lpr command.
