Wireless connection problems - How to disable IPv6

On this page:

IS&T is noticing that some computers are erroneously advertising IPv6 services to others on the wireless networks. This can be caused by a computer having Internet Connection Sharing enabled. When this is the case, users affected by these advertisements are unable to get to some websites and network services. IS&T is looking into ways to mitigate this problem on the network.

As a short term solution, IS&T recommends turning off IPv6 on your computer's wireless network card. This will allow you to continue to use the network uninterrupted.

Mac OS X 10.5 or 10.6

  1. Open the System Preferences
  2. Click Network
    System Preferences

  3. Select Airport on the left hand side and click the Advanced button
    Network

  4. Select the TCP/IP tab
  5. Choose Off next to Configure IPv6:
    • Leave Configure IPv4 alone.

Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) and above

By default, there is no option in the Network preference pane to turn off IPv6. You will have to run the following command in Terminal to disable IPv6. Replace "interfacename" with either Wi-Fi or Ethernet depending on which you are turning it off for:

networksetup -setv6off interfacename

Windows 7

Tip: Microsoft has a "Fix-it" tool that will do this for you. Please see: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929852
  1. Open the Network and Sharing Center.
You can do this by first clicking the Windows icon in the lower left hand corner, then typing "Network and Sharing Center" into the search box at the bottom and selecting it from the list.
    Search Box

  2. Click on Change Adapter Settings on the left hand side
    Network and Sharing Center

  3. Right click on your wireless adapter and click Properties
    Network Connections

  4. Uncheck Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)
    Properties
